This spring, I had the great opportunity to carry out a Short-Term Scientific Mission (STSM) at UCLouvain, in Louvain-La-Neuve, Belgium, hosted by Prof. Tom Leyssens and his research group. My stay, from May 19 to June 9, 2025, was part of the BEST-CSP COST Action and focused on investigating multicomponent crystalline systems with pharmaceutical and nutraceutical relevance.
The main aim of my STSM was to explore three binary systems: Resveratrol–Piperazine, Quercetin–Resorcinol, and Curcumin–Piperazine. During my time at UCLouvain, I prepared stoichiometric mixtures of these systems, optimized solvent systems for slurry crystallization, and performed mechanochemical screening using a Retsch MM400 mixer mill.
Characterization was done through XRPD, which confirmed the formation of distinct solid forms. I also began solubility measurements to evaluate the thermodynamic stability of theo btained cocrystals. Beyond the lab work, what truly made this experience memorable was the welcoming and collaborative environment within the host group. I was fortunate to engage in insightful scientific discussions, gain hands-on training with new techniques, and exchange ideas with fellow researchers. Prof. Leyssens and his team offered constant guidance and made sure I had everything I needed to make the most of this research stay.
While there wasn’t enough time to complete the full set of solubility experiments or construct phase diagrams, I returned home with valuable samples and data that will allow me to continue the work at my home institution. Future plans include completing the solubility studies, developing ternary phase diagrams, and maintaining collaboration with the host group for further data interpretation and potential joint publications.
This STSM was not only scientifically productive but also personally enriching. It gave me the chance to broaden my research skills, connect with experts in the field, and contribute to the broader goals of the BEST-CSP network.
I’m thankful to Prof. Leyssens, his team at UCLouvain, and the BEST-CSP Action for supporting this opportunity. I’m excited to continue building on this collaboration and to remain actively involved in the network.
